What Transport Operators and Warehouse Teams Need From Their Pallet Trucks

For transport operators, warehousing businesses and food distribution companies, pallet trucks aren't a nice to have. They're running all day, every day, under load, across a range of floor surfaces and environments.

When the equipment is right, it disappears into the background. Work flows, pallets move, staff get through their shifts without unnecessary strain.

When it isn't right, you feel it quickly. Loads that are slow to shift, operators who are worn out by mid-afternoon, and equipment that needs more attention than it should.

Here's what we see working well across NZ operations, and what to look for.

Volume and frequency drive the decision

The most important question isn't "manual or electric?" It's "how often are we moving pallets, and over what distance?"

In a busy warehouse or distribution environment where pallets are moving constantly, electric pallet trucks will almost always deliver a better outcome. The reduction in physical effort per movement adds up across a full shift, and across a full team.

For operations with lower movement frequency, or where pallets are mainly being shifted short distances around a loading bay, a well-specified manual truck is often perfectly adequate.

Supermarkets and food distribution: the pre-Christmas ramp-up

For supermarkets and food distribution businesses, the second half of the year brings a significant increase in throughput. Stock volumes rise, off-loading frequency goes up, and the demands on your team increase accordingly.

This is exactly the time when under-specced equipment becomes a problem. If your pallet trucks are already working hard, adding more volume on top of marginal equipment creates a compounding effect on both productivity and injury risk.

Getting your pallet truck setup reviewed before the busy period, rather than during it, is a straightforward way to protect your operation.

Floor conditions and environment

Not all warehouses and distribution centres are the same. Factors that affect your pallet truck specification include:

  • Floor surface and condition (smooth concrete, uneven surfaces, drains or transitions)
  • Whether equipment moves between indoor and outdoor areas
  • Wet or washdown environments (galvanised or stainless steel construction is worth considering here)
  • Temperature controlled or cold storage areas

A standard truck that works well on a smooth warehouse floor may struggle in a loading bay with kerb transitions, or in a chilled environment where standard materials perform differently.

Spare parts and backup support

One thing that often gets overlooked when choosing a pallet truck supplier is what happens when something needs attention.

Wheelco carries a full range of spare parts for every pallet truck we supply, held ex-stock. That includes wheels, rollers, handles, pumps, pins, axles, bearings, seals and more. If a component needs replacing, we can sort it quickly so your operation doesn't have to stop.

We also offer backup servicing, which means you're not left trying to track down a repairer or waiting on parts from overseas.

Our pallet trucks come with a 12-month warranty as standard. We stand behind the equipment we sell, because we use it ourselves every day in our own warehouse.

A range that covers most applications

Wheelco's pallet truck range runs from 1,000kg through to 2,500kg capacity, covering standard pallets, CHEP pallets, Euro pallets, fruit bins and non-standard applications. Both manual and electric options are available across the range.

If you have a specific requirement outside of what's listed on the site, including specialist environments or unusual load types, get in touch. We've solved some fairly unusual material handling challenges over the years.

Ready to review your setup?

If your operation is running on pallet trucks that are getting on in years, or you're not confident your current equipment is the right spec for the work it's doing, it's worth a conversation.

We can talk through your application, your pallet types, your team's workload, and what will actually work best for your environment.
