Manual vs Electric Pallet Trucks: Which Is Right for Your Operation?

Moving pallets is a daily reality for warehouses, transport operators, food distributors and manufacturing businesses across New Zealand. But the choice between a manual and electric pallet truck is one that often gets made too quickly, based on upfront cost alone.

Get it wrong and you're looking at slower throughput, operator fatigue, and equipment that wears out faster than it should. Get it right and you'll notice the difference every single shift.

Here's how to think through the decision properly.

The core difference

A manual pallet truck relies entirely on the operator. You pump the handle to raise the forks, and you push or pull the load by hand. They're simple, reliable, and well suited to lower throughput environments or shorter travel distances.

An electric pallet truck does the heavy lifting for you. A powered drive motor moves the load with minimal effort from the operator. Most models also have powered lift, which removes the pumping action entirely.

The equipment looks similar. The difference in day to day experience is significant.

When manual makes sense

Manual pallet trucks are a good fit when:

  • Loads are moved infrequently or over short distances
  • Floor space is tight and manoeuvrability matters more than speed
  • The operation is lower volume and operator fatigue is manageable
  • Budget is a primary consideration and the workload supports it

They're also a good backup option to have on site even if your primary setup is electric.

When electric is worth it

Electric pallet trucks come into their own when:

  • Loads are moved frequently across larger floor areas
  • Your team is handling pallets for extended periods throughout the shift
  • You want to reduce strain and fatigue related injury risk
  • Throughput is a priority and every minute of handling time adds up

For transport operators, warehouse teams and food distribution businesses where pallet movement is constant, electric models often pay for themselves quickly in productivity gains and reduced strain on staff.

Load capacity matters too

Both manual and electric pallet trucks come in a range of load ratings. Wheelco's range covers from 1,000kg up to 2,500kg, so it's worth matching the rating to your actual heaviest live load, not just your average.

Leave a reasonable margin. Uneven floors, ramp gradients and the dynamic forces involved in moving loaded equipment all place additional stress on the truck beyond the static weight of the pallet.

What about the pallet itself?

The type of pallet you're using affects your choice too. CHEP pallets, Euro pallets, fruit bins and non-standard pallets all have different fork entry heights and dimensions. If you're primarily working with CHEP pallets, for example, you'll want to make sure your pallet truck is set up for four-way entry and full fork support.

If you're not sure whether your current setup is matched properly to your pallets, it's worth a quick conversation with the Wheelco team.
