Tips for ordering a jockey wheel online
Found us during your jockey wheel research online? Here’s some tips to help - no matter who you end up buying from
Determine what your needs are
Jockey wheels and machinery stands vary in many ways, including weight capacity. It’s essential to work out the total load you’ll need to safely move (or stabilise), before ordering a part. It’s well worth leaving some headroom in your calculations too, especially as weight will often be unevenly distributed at times.
Check your trailer or towed equipment for existing mounting capability
You may find there’s a standard mounting style that makes some options better suited than others. You can find this out by looking around your trailer, or checking with the manufacturer (or user manual) for information.
Choose a wheel that’s ready for the terrain
You might have noticed our range comes in a variety of wheel types including smooth nylon and deep tread pneumatic options. If you plan to be getting your trailer across rough terrain, consider the benefits of a pneumatic option.
Look for lift adjustment measurements
That handle crank on the top of the jockey wheel raises or lowers the height of the wheel. This makes it easier to come off the ground when on the towbar or securely touch down before unmounting the trailer. Different jockey wheels have different rated lift adjustment heights, so it’s worth measuring up the distance between the part of your trailer or equipment that will have the jockey wheel mounted down to the ground. This way you can choose a product that will get the job done properly.
Understand the difference between a machinery stand and a jockey wheel.
The machinery stand keeps a trailer or equipment stable on the ground. It can be height adjusted in order to lift off the ground or remain steady on a flat surface. A jockey wheel’s job is to allow manoeuvring of the trailer when not attached to a towing vehicle. These two parts are often used together to provide both stability and ease of moving.
Some options are weld-on
Be sure to double check the mounting and product details. There are products that are designed to be welded to the application which requires the necessary skills and qualifications.
Replacing an old jockey wheel?
Use that as your guide - We often recommend customers reference their old, worn part to help determine the best new part to replace it with. Look for indicators like the height, shaft width, tyre size and type and other details that you can match up with online specifications. If you’re not sure, get in touch with our team who can guide you through this.
