Are you looking online for a great heavy duty castor to get the job done safely and reliably? Here are some heavy-duty hints

Know your weight capacity needs

First and foremost, you need to get a clear idea of the maximum weight your castors (in combination) will need to take. It’s always a good idea to leave plenty of headroom in your total weight capacity. Remember to add up the total weight rating of all your castors (typically four) and leave 20-30% for safety. 

Account for uneven distribution of load

One of the reasons to choose heavy duty wheels that provide more than ample weight rating is because of the shifting load put on the application in use. This is most common  when the load is being transferred onto and off of the equipment. When this happens, the weight isn’t perfectly distributed across all castors - some are taking more of the load for that short period of time. 

Even outside of loading or dismounting cargo, a handling equipment will sometimes need to shift something that’s not spread out evenly. There’s also a shift in load when moving up or down an incline. 

Check the mounting 

Heavy duty castors come in a variety of mounting configurations, so it's vital you check which one your application needs. Common types include plate mount (fixed and swivel versions), and bolt hole mount.  Getting the correct mount is a must if you’re replacing old castors. For new builds, you should choose the best mounting for the job - often plate mount is more sturdy with its four bolts, although we do offer excellent heavy duty bolt hole solutions too.

Think about the surface your application needs to move on

Is your handling equipment going to always be a clean, smooth, flat surface? If so, you should be good to go provided you’ve got your weight capacity sorted. But so many of us are using handling equipment in a variety of environments. It pays to consider what ground you’ll be wheeling across. For example, a urethane wheel offers smooth non-marking daily use which could be important in retail applications.

Durability in different conditions

Do you need your castors to withstand the wear and tear of high or low temperatures, wet surfaces or corrosive environments? You’ll want to choose a product that delivers a long lifespan and can stand up to these elements every day. Wheelco’s heavy duty stainless steel castors are excellent for this type of demand.

Replacing an old, worn castor? 

One of the quickest ways to order a heavy duty castor is by referring to any specs and measurements on your old, worn part. You’ll want to measure up the mounting plate (if applicable), wheel height when affixed to your equipment and a number of other measurements.
